My Downsizing Story
How Susan became a decluttering & moving expert
EVERY INCH OF STORAGE SPACE WAS FILLED WITH STUFF
The catalyst to change
I live comfortably in about 600 square feet. I’m not a minimalist, although I strive to live simply and uncluttered. My home is cozy. Peaceful even. But I didn’t always live this way.
In stark contrast, eight years ago, I lived in 2,400 square feet—and it was bursting with too much stuff. Every inch of storage space was filled with stuff I no longer needed, but hadn’t been able to let go. I kept telling myself I’d declutter and get rid of stuff—someday when I had the time.
“Someday” was foisted upon me in October 2011 when I was laid off from my job. Recently divorced and with little savings cushion, I could not make one more house payment.
I WHITTLED AWAY FROM 2400 SQUARE FEET TO 600 SQUARE FEET
Downsizing isn't easy
Over the next month, I emptied my house of my possessions. At one time, all of this stuff had been meaningful, but now it was an anchor holding me back. I gave away more than a third of my possessions.
A week before Christmas, friends and family members helped me move. What didn’t fit into my one-bedroom apartment I stored in a ten-by-twenty-foot storage unit. I continued whittling away at my possessions until they fit into a ten-by-ten storage unit. I’m still whittling.
I MOVED 5 TIMES IN 3 YEARS
Epiphany: less stuff + smaller space = larger life!
I moved five times in three years. With every move, I let go of more stuff.
Without a big house and yard to tend to, I had time to pursue new interests: dragon boating, kayaking, zip lining, swing dancing, belly dancing, Alpine skiing, hiking and nature photography.
I had an epiphany: Owning less stuff and living in a smaller space enabled me to live a large life brimming with possibilities. I became such an expert at downsizing that friends and family began asking me to help declutter their spaces or pack/unpack their belongings for their move.
